Patient Arrested following assault on healthcare worker at Thabong Clinic

Matjhabeng Swift action by detectives of the Vala uMgodi operation, in collaboration with combat units and private security, has led to the arrest of two mine employees allegedly aiding illegal mining activities near Hennenman.

The arrests on 21 July follow a thorough investigation that began on 8 July, when four illegal miners were intercepted attempting to access underground operations at a local mine.

Detectives of the Vala uMgodi unit meticulously traced leads and gathered evidence, which culminated in the apprehension of the two individuals.

The first suspect, a 45-year-old foreign national employed as a dump truck driver at the mine, was arrested. His black Mercedes-Benz minibus, allegedly used to transport illegal miners, was confiscated.

Further investigation led to the arrest of a 41-year-old woman, who is employed at the same mine. Her vehicle was also seized, as it is alleged to have been used in transporting illegal miners onto the mine premises.

Both suspects were traced and arrested in the suburb of Dagbreek, Welkom. They face charges including conspiracy to commit illegal mining, mining rights prohibition relating to illegal mining, negligently endangering mine health and safety of others, intimidation, and trespassing. They are expected to appear in court soon.

This success is part of a broader, multidisciplinary approach by Vala uMgodi, working in conjunction with mine security.

In the past seven days alone, these operations have resulted in the arrest of 69 suspects involved in illicit mining activities. This includes 55 undocumented foreign nationals, and the confiscation of gold-bearing materials and equipment used in illegal mining.

More arrests are imminent as investigations continue into these illicit operations.
