Chaos erupted at the Welkom SPCA on Thursday (09/02) when a unit from Matjhabeng law enforcement arrived at the gates and proceeded to cut the electricity.
This was done in spite of an existing court order prohibiting the Matjhabeng Municipality from doing so.
In March 2016, an interdict prohibited the municipality from cutting the power supply. This interdict is still in place, but officials chose to ignore this and proceed with the cut-off.
Zack Rossouw, chairman of the Welkom SPCA, approached a lawyer and obtained an interdict.
A court order was issued on Monday (13/02), ordering that the electricity be restored. When this did not happen a further order allowed the SPCA to contact an electrician and restore the power supply.
Vista approached Tshediso Tlali, Matjhabeng spokesperson, for a comment on this issue. At the time of going to press, the municipality had not responded.
