To celebrate Heritage Month, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Lejweleputswa District held multicultural celebrations throughout the district.

The events were symbolic of the rich and diverse culture within the SAPS.  “Heritage and culture extend beyond our homes and communities, and exist in places of work. Heritage Day is a celebration of diversity,” said Sgt. Palesa Thabana of the Lejweleputswa police.

Members from various stations and the district office dedicated themselves on Tuesday, 23 September. They recognized the significance of South African heritage.

“Through exploring and displaying artistic ideas, traditions, customs, languages and traditional meals, Members showcased a spirit of unity in diversity. The celebrations were marked by performances, cooking, setting up wood fires, planting, and storytelling,” she said.

In Virginia, the police celebrated heritage by planting flowers and showcasing traditional attire. In Thabong, the men and women prepared traditional meals and created visual displays of a traditional environment.

 “Members from different components looked embellished in their traditional clothes accompanied by extreme jubilation,” said Thabana. The members from Odendaalsrus prepared, shared, and indulged in traditional cuisines.

The heritage event in Welkom showcased cultural groups. They went head-to-head. These groups competed for the title of the best cultural presentation. This competition was in front of a judging panel.

From traditional wedding ceremonies to the narration of vibrant historic events, the event showcased a deep connection of culture. Various cultural groups were represented.

“In conclusion, the celebrations were a true embodiment of heritage. Members were reminded that diversity does not diminish individual identity.”
