A headstone from a defunct business stands as a poignant reminder of better times at the Amogelang Mall, formerly known as the Liberty Centre, which once served as the beating heart of Welkom’s economy from the 1980s onwards.

The shopping centre, which was integral to the city’s commercial landscape for decades, now presents a stark picture of urban decay. What was once a thriving hub of retail activity has been stripped bare, with its underground parking areas flooded and transformed into makeshift refuse dumps.

The deteriorating structure has become more than just an eyesore—it has evolved into a crime hotspot that concerns local authorities. Police records indicate various criminal activities in the surrounding area, with the most disturbing incidents involving the discovery of two male bodies found floating in water within the abandoned structures.

According to Sergeant Palesa Thabana, SAPS spokesperson, official police records show a range of crimes reported from the nearby Mooi Street area. “However, during the period from February until the current month, only one drug-related case was reported to have occurred at the abandoned building. Other crimes reported from surrounding areas include common assaults, assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, drug-related offences, theft, and theft out of motor vehicles,” Thabana explained.

The grim discovery of the bodies has added a macabre dimension to the mall’s decline. “One deceased male has been positively identified by their next of kin,” Thabana confirmed, whilst investigations continue into both incidents.

For residents of Welkom, the mall’s current state serves as a daily reminder of the city’s economic struggles. Many remember when the Liberty Centre was a beautiful centrepiece of the central business district, bustling with shoppers and serving as a social gathering point for the community. The surrounding Central Park was known for its flower gardens and fountains, and aviaries at the back of the mall provided a pleasant respite for tired shoppers.

The transformation from vibrant commercial centre to abandoned ruin reflects broader challenges facing many South African mining towns like nearby Virginia, where economic shifts have left once-prosperous areas struggling to maintain their commercial infrastructure.

The abandoned mall has become a stark symbol of Welkom’s economic decline, prompting daily lament from long-time residents who witnessed its heyday and now see only decay where prosperity once flourished.
