A 50-year-old man from Harrismith has voluntarily handed himself over to local authorities amidst serious allegations of sexual assault involving a 15-year-old learner from a school in Harrismith.
This incident, which reportedly took place on Tuesday, has sent shockwaves through the community and sparked an ongoing police investigation.
According to reports, the young learner was called to the principal’s staff room whilst studying with peers. It is alleged that she was taken to an old office within the school premises where the suspect engaged in inappropriate behaviour.
Distressed, the student confided in fellow classmates, who encouraged her to inform her parents. They subsequently reported the incident to the police, prompting immediate action from law enforcement.
WO Mmako Mophiring of the police confirmed the investigation, stating: “A case of sexual assault is being actively pursued, and we are committed to ensuring justice for the victim.”
The suspect, whose identity has been disclosed, is expected to appear in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Monday 17 November facing charges related to sexual assault.
Mophiring says this incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges surrounding the safety of children in educational environments.
