Two months after being raped by a man she knew, a 12-year-old broke the silence and reported the incident and the man was arrested.

In October a 12-year-old was walking home from school when a man she was familiar with instructed her to go into his shack. When they were inside he forcefully undressed her and then raped her.

“The child has been praised by for breaking the silence and reporting the rape, especially during 16 Days of Activism. She was threatened not to tell anyone about the rape, and she kept quite for two months until she broke the silence when she reported it to a relative on 10 December,” says Capt. Stephen Thakeng, media liaison officer for the Lejweleputswa police.

The Brandfort police members were summoned to the scene and the victim pointed out a 35-year-old male.

He was arrested and is facing charges of raping a minor.

The District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj Gen. Lerato Molale praised the girl for breaking the silence, even though she was threatened.

“I encourage others to do the same as we continue to celebrate 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children,” says Molale.
