A prestigious team of 15 boxers has been selected to represent the Free State at the South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) youth and elite national trials that will take place in KwaZulu-Natal from 1 to 6 July.

“This is an incredible accomplishment and a tremendous honour for these athletes,” says Adri Smith, team manager.

It all started when 30 boxers from every district in the Free State showcased their talent at the Sanabo Championship held at the Frontier Inn and Casino in Bethlehem on 26 April.

Among the 15 selected, eight represent the Lejweleputswa District including Welkom and Virginia.

Among the 15 selected, eight represent the Lejweleputswa District including Welkom and Virginia. These boxers are Keagan Smith and Juan-Steve Nortje of Smithy’s Boxing Gym; Leporo Mogoregi, Tshepo Monyeke and Simphiwe Sand of the Thabong Boxing Club; as well as Lerato Malefane, Wandile Mtshali and Retshidisi Khau of the Meloding Boxing Club.

“We invite the community to rally behind these exceptional young athletes as they prepare for the nationals. Unfortunately, there is no funding available for boxing in our province, and these dedicated boxers need support to seize this opportunity,” says Smith.

Sanabo is an open amateur boxing organisation affiliated with the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) regulations, with this pathway also leading to the Olympic Games – boxing being a featured sport in 2028.
