A fourth-year student and mother of a three-week-old baby collapsed and died whilst presenting in class at the Central University of Technology (CUT) campus in Welkom.
The young mother, who was enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Economics and Management Sciences programme, Nonny Tilo, died on 29 September after she collapsed in class.

The Central University of Technology confirms that Tilo sadly succumbed to a short illness during class. This heartbreaking incident occurred in the presence of fellow students and staff, and has deeply affected the entire campus community.
“The University is working closely with the Dean of Students and the student leadership to ensure that all affected individuals receive the necessary emotional and psychological support during this difficult time,” said a spokesperson for CUT.
Counselling services have been made available to students and staff through the CUT Wellness Centre. In light of this tragedy, and in remembrance of the student, all academic activities at the Welkom Campus were suspended on Tuesday, 30 September. Academic activities resumed on Wednesday, 1 October.
A formal investigation into the circumstances of Tilo’s passing has been initiated, whilst management and student leadership remain in close communication.
