A manhunt was launched after a large quantity of copper cables were taken at gunpoint from the Matjhabeng electrical substation.
Two security guards were on duty at the substation on 10 August when they were allegedly overpowered and then restrained with cable ties by more than ten men at about 01:00.
During this incident a pellet gun was taken from the two guards as well as a company cellphone.
One of the security guards managed to untie himself and escaped to the Welkom-Virginia road to seek help.
A security vehicle on patrol spotted him and stopped to assist. An ambulance was then called to the scene after which one of the security guards was admitted to hospital.
A case of theft and tampering with essential infrastructure was registered for further investigation.
The following places were affected as a result of this crime: the Welkom CBD, parts of Doorn, Bronville, Mandela Park, Extention 15, and the Thabong sewerage treatment plant.
