Accused in controversial assault case now suspected of fraud

The main accused in a controversial case in involving the assault and torture of an elderly woman at a frail-centre in Welkom, was arrested on Wednesday evening following allegations of fraud.

The 64-year-old was scheduled to appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s court on Friday, but the matter was not placed on the role as the prosecutor has queried aspects of the case. It will be rescheduled for a later date once the query has been sorted out.

On Wednesday, 18 March the police received a complaint of fraud where a 65-year-old male was defrauded of his money after he lost his bank card.

Sgt.Palesa Thabana, spokesperson for the Lejweleputswa SAPS, says according to information, the victim noticed payments from four different stores going off is banking app on Tuesday 17 March. His card was missing.

On Wednesday 18 March the victim then went to inquire at the various stores where his bank was used. CCTV footage revealed when the 64-year-old suspect had allegedly made payments using the victim’s bank card. The matter was reported to the police and a case of fraud was registered.

In a separate case that is still pending, the 81-year-old victim, Bettie Payne (81), was badly assaulted by care givers at an old age home in Welkom.

“Preliminary investigations were conducted, and the female suspect was traced and arrested at her home in Welkom on Wednesday, 18 March on a charge of fraud,” says Thabana.

The accused was released from jail on Friday without formally appearing, pending further investigations.

In July 2025, the 64-year-old woman, and five other accused were arrested on charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A trial date for the assault case has been set for 10 July in the Welkom Regional Court Q.
