The “Mielie” is the oldest marathon in the Free State, and Saturday’s event marked the largest field of athletes to take part in the history of the marathon.

More than 1 200 athletes across all distances took part in the 47th Mielie Marathon that took place in and around Welkom on Saturday 17 January.

The “Mielie” is the oldest marathon in the Free State, and Saturday’s event marked the largest field of athletes to take part in the history of the marathon.

Peri Erasmus, chairman of Goudveld Multisport, says there was a record turnout and strong community support which resulted in a festive race-day experience. Distances offered were a fun run of 5 km and races of 10 km, 21,1 km and 42,2 km.

“During the course of the day we had extensive volunteer involvement, race marshals, lead bikes and safety support throughout the course. This year’s race has set a new benchmark for future editions,” says Erasmus.

The overall winners of the 42,2 km were Morabaraba Sello, 02:30:12 (men) and Grace Harrison, 03:13:09 (women). The 21,1 km half marathon was won by Siyabonga Derison, 01:08:17 (men) and Arouchelle Niewenhuis, 01:27:02 (women). The 10 km was won by Tshediso Mazinyo, 00:34:42 (men), and Este Van Tonder, 00:38:45 (women).

Erasmus says the 47th Mielie Marathon was a landmark moment for the club and the community.

“This was the biggest Mielie Marathon we have ever hosted, and it is a clear reflection of the trust runners place in our event. What makes this race special is not only the competition on the road, but the people behind it – our volunteers, marshals, sponsors, water-point teams, and community partners. It truly takes a village to deliver an event of this scale.

“On behalf of Goudveld Multisport, I extend my sincere thanks to every runner who supported us, and to everyone who contributed to making this edition a resounding success. We are proud of what was achieved and excited about the future of the Mielie Marathon.”
