Welkom’s super marathon runner, Nkhetheni Masupa, has set his sights on even greater achievements in 2026 with the confidence he gained in 2025 by finishing two Abbott World Marathon Majors – the London and New York marathons. He aims to complete all nine majors by 2028.
“In 2025 I completed 12 marathons and in 2025 I will plan to take part in 13. My goal is to finish all of these events in two hours, sub 3, and I have managed that so well this far.
“This year is going to be another great running season for me as I have planned a very interesting schedule across the globe.

“I am planning to complete three of the majors including our own Sanlam Cape Town marathon on Sunday, 24 May.
“Finishing this marathon will earn me a star as I am selected to compete in the Abbott World Age Category Championships due to my great performance in New York,” says Masupa.
He says training for this year’s events started in 2025, with numerous training sessions with his fellow Welkom Runners group members throughout the festive season.

“Do more of what you like most. Running is my therapy, with me competing with no one but myself,” he says.
The marathons Masupa has planned for 2026 include the Mielie Marathon (completed on 17 January), the NMB Gqeberha 50 km Ultra Marathon (a qualifier for the Comrades and Two Oceans marathons), the annual Anco Ultra Marathon 4-in-1, the Kosmos 3-in-1, the Om die Dam-marathon, the 130th Boston Marathon, the N12 50 km, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (SCTM), the Comrades Ultra Marathon, the TCS Sydney 42 km Ultra Marathon, the Vaal River City Marathon (or Cape Gate Vaal Marathon), the Sani Stagger (South Africa’s steepest marathon) , and the 32 km-long Tough One (Randburg, South Africa).
