At just 15 years old, trumpeter Alzanedrio Willemse from Kariega is making waves in the music scene. Over the past two years, his music career has grown significantly, allowing him to perform at major events, collaborate with talented musicians, and develop a unique style.
Willemse’s musical journey is marked by a commitment to refining his craft. “I’ve honed skills like improvisation, sight-reading, and arranging music,” he said. “My stage presence has improved, allowing me to connect with audiences and convey emotions through my performances.” These refined skills have enabled Willemse to deliver confident, expressive, and engaging shows.
Two years ago, the young musician told the UD Express, “Growing up in the small town of Kariega, I’m not very exposed to a lot of musicians and professional instrument players. But two years ago when I was 11 years old, my dad taught me how to play the trumpet and I haven’t looked back since.”
Among his recent milestones are the release of new music on streaming platforms and performances at prominent festivals across South Africa. His social media presence has also soared, with over 35 000 subscribers on YouTube and 19 000 followers on TikTok. One of his YouTube videos even amassed 31 million views, providing immense motivation for the young artist. “Engaging with supporters and collaborating with influencers has been key to expanding my audience,” he explained.
Willemse’s music is heavily influenced by the Cape Minstrels tradition, as well as jazz, classical, and pop music. This blend of styles reflects his diverse inspirations and cultural heritage. However, his journey hasn’t been without challenges. Financial constraints have sometimes limited his access to resources and opportunities. “I’ve relied on support from family, friends, and my community,” he said, noting that collaborations, sponsorships, and crowd-funding have been crucial.
A significant source of motivation comes from his family. “My parents and family are my biggest supporters. Their emotions, especially when I play the trumpet, inspire me,” he said. He also expressed gratitude to his school, Hoërskool Brandwag, for their encouragement.
Looking forward, Willemse is excited about returning to the Kaapse Klopse and collaborating with other musicians on live performances and music videos. His personal experiences, upbringing in Kariega, and involvement in the Kaapse Klopse tradition heavily influence his songwriting. He draws inspiration from his surroundings, culture, and community, creating music that reflects his unique perspective.
Through his music, Willemse aims to convey joy, passion, and connection. He hopes to inspire listeners, bring people together, and celebrate the beauty and diversity of South African culture. His journey is a testament to his dedication, talent, and the support of those around him.
