In commemoration of Women’s Month, the Sundays River Valley Municipality joined forces with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Legal Aid South Africa, and the Ilanga Victim Support Centre to host a safety roadblock on the R336 road in Nqweba (formerly known as Kirkwood).
The event, held recently, brought together women from various institutions to share vital information on road and home safety.
Municipal spokesperson, Zusiphe Jaji, emphasised the significance of the initiative, stating, “As we celebrate Women’s Month, it is essential to acknowledge the critical issue of women’s safety in our society. Today’s roadblock is a proactive step towards creating awareness and providing support to women who may be vulnerable to gender-based violence and femicide.”
During the roadblock, stakeholders stopped vehicles to conduct thorough safety checks, including vehicle fitness, driver fitness, and overloading inspections. However, the primary focus was on engaging with motorists, particularly women, to share crucial information on safety measures and available support services.
Jaji added, “We want to empower women with knowledge on how to protect themselves and their loved ones. We also want to assure them that help is available if they find themselves in situations of abuse or violence.”
The teams distributed informative materials and offered guidance on how to access assistance from organisations like Legal Aid South Africa and the Ilanga Victim Support Centre.
As motorists passed through the roadblock, they were greeted with warm wishes of “Happy Women’s Day” and encouraged to prioritise their safety on the roads and in their homes.
By working together with stakeholders, the municipality aims to create a safer and more supportive environment for women in the Sundays River Valley community.
In conclusion, Jaji stressed, “Let us continue to work together to build a society where women feel safe, valued, and empowered. Happy Women’s Month!”
