May 25 was a life-changing day for Nokhaya Mhlahlo (68), a resident of KwaNobuhle – it was the day she could finally set foot in her RDP house.

The RDP house was built in 2005 or 2006 and left unfinished until a local family, the Jaftas, stepped in.

Mzukisi and Phinda Jafta spent R42 000 on the house, which still needs a ceiling. But Nokhaya is living there and loving it.

“She lived in an informal structure for 29 years,” said Mzukisi.

“Her so-called house leaked heavily when it rained. They had no toilet all these years. The father of that house suffered a stroke. That family should have at least a toilet facility, because the condition of the father of that house has deteriorated.

“We, the Jafta family, decided to intervene and lend a helping hand, taking that old lady out of that mess she was living in.

“We supplied everything; the material and labourers,” he added.

They officially handed over the keys to Nokhaya’s new home on May 25.
