A CARCASS of a slaughtered donkey, medical disposables, gumboots and loads of plastic bags are but some of the waste seen next to the disgraced R367 road towards Koedoeskloof waste removal site.

Motorists travelling on the road, last week aired their dismay and anger on social media platforms, about the waste next to the road as a result of waste removal vehicles not being fined for disobeying regulations to cover their loads in preventing waste from blowing off.

Mthubanzi Mniki, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality communications and media management officer said, there are various regulations to carrying of waste with which all registered waste removal vehicles have to comply.

“An example is that all waste removal companies and vehicles must be fit for purpose. If residents or motorists see a transgression, they must report it to 0800 20 5050,” said Mniki.

It also is recommended to take a picture of the truck that does not comply with safety regulations.

According to Frans Swanepoel, DA proportional representation (PR) councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay, the law enforcement section of waste management, town rangers as well as the traffic department are suppose to fine waste removal vehicles not adhering to regulations.

“Those vehicles are not allowed to transport waste if they are not equipped with netting to prevent litter from blowing off,” said Swanepoel.

With regard to the carcass of the donkey which has been slaughtered next to the road, Mniki said waste management will remove it.

The municipality has appointed litterpickers to clean the R367 from windblown litter, but it seems that they have not been on duty for quite a while.

Swanepoel said if law enforcement was practised the R367 road would not be in the disgusting condition it is.

He also pointed out that illegal dumping is an increased concern next to the road, as people do not want to make the effort to take the legal route of going to Koedoes-kloof waste removal site.
