The Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) announced this week that the third VW Health Care Run will take place on May 10, at the company’s plant in Kariega.

The annual event, which forms part of an International Health Care Run held across 20 Volkswagen sites worldwide, aims to promote healthy lifestyles among employees while also engaging with the broader community.

Participants can choose between three race distances: a 5km fun run, a 10km race, and a half-marathon of 21.1km. All races will start and finish at the Volkswagen PeoplePavilion, with routes partially traversing through the main Volkswagen manufacturing plant, offering runners a unique perspective of the facility.

“At Volkswagen Group Africa, the wellbeing of our employees is a priority,” said Russell Coleman, VWGA’s Human Resources Director. “The Health Care Run is a highlight in our events calendar, but it is only one of the ways in which we encourage our employees to prioritise their wellbeing.”

The 5km fun run is open to participants of all ages, though minors must be accompanied by an adult. For more serious runners, the 10km and 21.1km races are available to individuals aged 16 and older.

This year’s event will also incorporate the Eastern Province Athletics (EPA) Championship in the 21.1km category, adding significance to the longer-distance race.

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in various categories. In the 5km race, the first three overall finishers will receive prizes, while the 10km and 21.1km races will reward top performers across different age groups.

Entry fees have been set at R30 for the 5km run, R150 for the 10km race, and R200 for the half-marathon. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Eastern Province Athletics, supporting the development of the sport in the region.

Coleman added that VWGA looks forward to “welcoming our VWGA family – including the wider Nelson Mandela Bay – to this event,” highlighting the company’s commitment to community engagement.

Registration for the VW Health Care Run is open until May 5, and can be completed online through WebTickets.
