THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has noted with concern the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections in Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle.

While Motherwell has been leading as a hotspot for Covid-19 confirmed cases in the metropole, latest statistics in NMBM show that Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle are fast catching up and together have recorded more confirmed cases than Motherwell.

As at June 22, Motherwell had 547 confirmed cases while Uitenhage and Kwa-Nobuhle recorded 306 and 266 confirmed cases respectively. Combined the two areas recorded 572 cases.

Covid-19 Disaster Management Forum chairperson Shane Brown said: “We have a newly developed hotspot in Uitenhage and KwaNobuhle. We must not ignore what is happening across the Metro. Cases have increased everywhere.”

Brown said private hospitals’ beds were currently full.

“The provincial hospitals, Livingston, Dora Nginza and in Uitenhage, have some capacity, but they are also filling up.

“Fortunately we have the new VW field hospital which will assist hugely with the rising numbers. This field hospital came at the right time, it was perfect timing.”

VWSA and the German government sponsored the field hospital and named it after Rev. Dr Elizabeth Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni.

Brown urges residents to continue adhering to the Covid-19 safety measures as there is still no vaccine for the virus.

“People must wash their hands regularly, they must wear face masks when in public and they must keep their social distancing,” said Brown.
