Two people died when a truck and taxi collided on a slight bend between Cockscomb and Bluecliff, Kariega, early this morning, August 17.
A white Mercedes-Benz truck, transporting scrap metal and a Toyota Quantum taxi travelling in the direction of Kirkwood, collided at approximately 06:15 this morning, resulting in the taxi losing control and rolling.
Following the accident, the truck allegedly fled the scene.
According to police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, a man and woman in the taxi died, while 12 others were rushed to a local hospital for medical assistance.
“The driver of the Mercedes-Benz truck failed to stop at the accident scene. A case of culpable homicide is under investigation,” Swart said. “The names of the victims will be released once formal identification is done.”
Police are appealing to anyone that may have witnessed the incident or is able to assist with information about the driver or his/her whereabouts, to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer, Deon Roos on 079 896 8148 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.

UPDATE:
Uitenhage detectives have successfully apprehended the 40-year-old truck driver who was allegedly involved in yesterday’s collision. The truck was also impounded for further investigation.
The 40-year-old man will appear in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 19 August on charges ranging from culpable homicide, failure to stop at an accident scene and failure to render assistance at an accident scene. Investigations are continuing.
