Three learners from Solomon Mahlangu Secondary School have won the trio division at the prestige ABC Motsepe South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) national championship held in Randburg. One of the learners, Lutholwethu Kom, also won the Best Baritone Solo division. Three learners from Solomon Mahlangu Secondary School in KwaNobuhle excelled at the ABC Motsepe South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod (SASCE) national championship held in Randburg, where they won the trio division as well as the best baritone solo.

Lema Ntluko (Grade 10), Lutholwethu Kom (Grade 12) and Sakhumzi Matthews (Grade 12) sang their way to success winning the zonal competition, sub-district, district, and provincial round to proceed to the nationals where they again won their trio performances (86.33%) and Lutholwethu won the best baritone solo division (89.67%).

The educators who assisted the trio to success are conductor Ntombovuyo Cekiso, with assistant conductors Nomzekelo Kene and Ntombizodwa Zito. Their voice coach is Athi Zindlani.

This choral Eisteddfod, to celebrate the musical talents of South African learners through onstage musical performance and song, is one of the Department of Education’s most significant cultural events on the annual school calendar.

Each year SASCE draws thousands of learners from across the country to participate in more than 30 categories on national level. This year 95 secondary schools and 60 primary school participated with 60 members per choir totalling more than 6 500 participants.
