KARIEGA – The South African Police Service confirms that Kamesh detectives are investigating three murders linked to incidents that occurred in Rosedale, Kariega, on Saturday, 27 June.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, at approximately 05:12, police responded to a shooting in Seagull Street, Rosedale, where a 53-year-old male cab driver was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the head while seated behind the steering wheel of his vehicle.
“It is alleged that the driver had dropped off a passenger at a residence in Seagull Street when an unknown gunman opened fire on the vehicle,” she said. “The victim was declared dead at the scene and the suspect/s are yet to be identified.”
Later the same day, at approximately 12:20, police and emergency services responded to a house fire in Seagull Street, Rosedale.
“After the fire was extinguished, the bodies of two adult males, both 28 years old, were discovered inside the burnt structure,” she said. “Preliminary information suggests that members of the community allegedly set the house alight.”
Janse Van Rensburg added that the property is believed to be a known drug house and is the same residence where the cab driver had reportedly dropped off a passenger shortly before he was shot earlier that morning.
“Cases of murder (three counts) and arson are under investigation. At this stage, police are investigating whether the incidents are linked.”
She added that the circumstances surrounding the incidents form part of the ongoing investigation, and no arrests have been made.
Star Cabs shared a statement in relation to the incident. “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that, due to unfortunate and devastating events beyond our control, our services will be limited and restricted until further notice,” they said.
During what they described as a “difficult time” for them, they said, “We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause.
