TOSSING, turning and worrying about the corona virus pandemic inspired a resident from Despatch rather to get up in the middle of the night and write down the thoughts that kept on going through his mind.
“This virus, what on earth really caused it? How long will it last? Will there be a cure? Owing to the lack of answers, I thought let me rather focus on the lighter side of life. That is how I came about writing this poem,” said Herman Steyn, a well-known bowler from Despatch.
Bowling is one of the activities that he misses a lot.
“Just as I was on a winning streak in a bowling competition, the lockdown was implemented, and all sporting activities seized. I am looking forward to getting back on the greens again.”
Steyn is well-known for his sense of humour and here is his tongue in cheek poem, comparing the corona virus to the Toyota Corona of yesteryear.
Corona vs corona – by Herman Steyn
In the 1970s and 80s there was a virus called Toyota Corona. Made in Japan, this Corona was extremely popular, reliable and was available in various colours.
This Corona was very social. It took you to the beach, cinemas, the church, your kids to school, to work, to braais, your favourite sporting events, your friends and family.
It needed very little attention, a wash now and then, a polish which acts as a mask for protection against the elements.
This Corona was exported all over the world and made economies blossom and businesses thrived.
It even had a slogan …
Right, always Right Toyota Corona.
And then in 2020 a corona virus called Covid-19 struck the world. “Made” in China, this corona virus is extremely unpopular, unreliable, dangerous and every colour of person is affected by it.
This corona virus is very unsocial. It keeps you away from the beach, cinemas, the church, your kids from school, the work, braais, your favourite sporting events, your friends and family.
It needs a lot of attention, keeps you in quarantine and self-isolation, a mask is compulsory, and you need to wash your hands regularly to protect you against the virus.
This corona virus was “exported” all over the world and made economies crumble and businesses close. It also has a slogan . . . Wrong, always wrong corona Covid-19.
