A 15-year-old boy was brutally murdered close to the Gerald Smith Cemetery in Kariega this morning, August 31.

UPDATE: The 21-year-old suspect, Luther Plaatjies, appeared in the Kariega Magistrates Court yesterday, September 2. He will remain in custody until September 8 and has been charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances. Since the 16-year-old is a minor, he will appear at House Nerina on Wednesday. “It is alleged that the 21-year-old robbed him [Volminck] and the 16-year-old stabbed him,” police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, said.

UPDATE: Two people, a 16-year-old boy and 21-year-old man, have been arrested at their homes in connection with the murder. They are due to appear in the Kariega Magistrates Court tomorrow, September 2.

UPDATE: The boy has been identified by police as Ferguson Volminck.

A 15-year-old boy was brutally murdered close to the Gerald Smith Cemetery in Kariega this morning, August 31.

The boy was walking in McCarthy Street at approximately 07:45 when he was approached by a group of people. A fight allegedly broke out between them and the teen was stabbed with a knife in the chest.

Police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, said that the child was taken to a local hospital by his father, where he died.

“The motive for the murder is unknown at this stage. A case of murder is being investigated by SAPS Kamesh detectives,” Swart said.

No arrests have yet been made.
