A significant breakthrough has been achieved in the quest to enhance public transportation in Kariega, as the NMB Regional Taxi Association and the Libhongolethu Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) have signed a landmark memorandum of agreement.

This partnership, facilitated by Acting City Manager Mandla George, is planned to provide residents with a safer, more efficient, and affordable transportation network.

The agreement marks a major milestone in the implementation of Phase 1b, which will cover Kariega and parts of the North-Eastern side of the Metro. The Kariega route is expected to launch in November this year, bringing relief to commuters who have long awaited a more efficient transportation system.

Councillor Bradley Murray, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Roads and Transport, expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, emphasising the importance of providing a safe and reliable transportation system for the community.

“We are pleased with the progress so far. It might have taken longer, but the quality of work that has been done justifies the time taken. I am monitoring the work being done on other buses closely. We need those buses back on the road. Our people need a safe, reliable and affordable transport.”

This new agreement comes as the Libhongolethu IPTS has already reduced waiting times by 15 minutes, thanks to the repair of eight buses.

The increased frequency of buses on the road has resulted in a more efficient and reliable service, with buses now running every 15 minutes during peak hours.

The improved schedule operates from 06:30 to 08:30 in the morning and 14:10 to 18:10 in the afternoon, ensuring timely service for passengers.

Commuters can purchase Libhongolethu IPTS tickets at the Metro Customer Care Centre and Cleary Park Mall offices.
