ABOUT 50 children who were clad in traditional attire were treated by dozens of taxi drivers on Sunday afternoon in Khayelitsha, Kariega, as part of a 11-year celebration of “no taxi violence over Khayelitsha Two route” between Uncedo Taxi Services and the Uitenhage and District Taxi Association.
As part of the event at least 45 pairs of school shoes and socks were donated to Nokhwezi Primary School learners by taxi drivers. Two huge cakes were bought by taxi drivers and shared with children, teachers, and other residents.
The Department of Education’s Learner Support Agent (LSA) Nomvuyo Lungu who serves Nokhwezi Primary School welcomed the donations and said it was much needed.
Meanwhile national chairperson of Border Alliance, Mthuthuzeli Madwara, who also attended the event, alongside chairpersons of both taxi associations who are operating competitively promised the teachers and school children of Nokhwezi Primary that the taxi bosses “will come back again in February 2022 from national level with full support and again sponsor the school.”
Uitenhage and District Taxi Association Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lubabalo Vesele said the funds used for the event came from taxi fares of both Khayelitsha and KwaNobuhle.
“Because of your R12 taxi fare from Khayelitsha to town, we are now proudly ploughing back to our own community we serve. Thank you all for your support,” said Vesele.
