A man has been arrested and detained at the Kwanobuhle Police Station after he was caught red-handed while vandalising the Jeff Masemola Hall in Kariega on June 10. 

Executive Mayor Gary van Niekerk said he was informed that an off-duty Metro Police officer, Sergeant Ntsikilelo Konono caught a man red-handed while vandalising the Jeff Masemola Hall in Kariega on June 10. 

He said the suspect is now in custody at the Kwanobuhle Police Station.

“Thank you, Sergeant for your diligence and commitment to your calling as a law enforcement officer,” said van Niekerk. 

According to police spokesperson, Sandra Janse Van Rensburg, SAPS Kwanobuhle confirmed that a suspect was detained on charges of possession of suspected stolen property by an officer of Metro Police. 

Van Niekerk said the CCTV equipment worth R45 million which is currently gathering dust in storage will be installed to ensure that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro’s surveillance system is functional again to assist officers to fight crime.
