A 27-year-old suspect failed to succeed in his plan to rob a supermarket in Thomas Gamble, Uitenhage, after the manager tackled him and effected an arrest.
According to police information, the suspect last Friday morning at about 10:00 entered the store in Bloekomboom Street and walked up to an employee and stabbed her in the neck.
“A customer attempted to assist the woman and he too was stabbed in his chest. The suspect then jumped over the counter and tried to open the cash register. The manager tackled him, and other employees assisted the manager in arresting him,” said Colonel Priscilla Naidu from SAPS communications division.
When the police arrived on the scene the manager and employees handed the suspect to the police. Both injured persons were taken to hospital for treatment.
The suspect has been detained on charges of attempted business robbery and attempted murder and appeared in the Uitenhage Magistrate Court on Monday.
