THE Uitenhage SPCA is looking for an affordable premises in the central business district of Uitenhage to open a charity shop with the aim to contribute financially to the association which serves the whole of Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounding areas.

“We are desperately looking for a little shop, either in Durban or Caledon Streets, to start our own charity shop,” said Deirdre Swift, chairperson of the Uitenhage SPCA.

“Basically, instead of just having our Jumble Sale every second Sunday at the kennels, which is just eight hours a month, we would much rather open a little shop, selling items five or six days a week. This will obviously generate a much larger income which in return will financially help the SPCA tremendously.

“The problem is we can’t find a little shop and we can’t afford a huge rental. Maybe there is somebody out there who is good enough either to give us a low rental or possibly subsidise us until we are up and running and able to afford to pay reasonable rental.”

According to Swift it does not need to be a huge shop, just enough space to sell the items they normally have at the Jumble Sale. The items sold are mostly good used items which they receive from the public or local businesses. The shop will be run by SPCA volunteers.

The public are also encouraged, whenever they clean their cupboards or garages and chuck out items that are still good enough to use, but for some reason are not being used, to donate it to the SPCA. These items can be dropped off at the Uitenhage SPCA in Schonland Street, Kruisrivier industrial area.
