KARIEGA – The SPCA Uitenhage has described its latest fundraising initiative as a powerful reminder of the strength of community support, following a successful weekend activation at Corkwood Square Mall that raised R9,248 for animals in need.
The fundraiser formed part of the organisation’s broader efforts to secure financial stability to purchase a place they can call home amid its impending eviction, a situation that has prompted widespread public backing in recent weeks.
SPCA Uitenhage was given the opportunity to host a stand at the shopping centre for the entire weekend, thanks to Corkwood Square manager Ronel Britz, whose coordination helped create a vibrant, family-friendly atmosphere. Entertainment included Paw Patrol characters, martial arts displays, a traditional Chinese dragon performance, and prize giveaways, drawing steady foot traffic and encouraging donations.
Vice-chairperson Christelle Erasmus said the organisation was “blown away” by the turnout and generosity.
“It was a fantastic day with all the entertainment. Ronel really goes all the way,” said Erasmus. “You cannot always predict how much will be raised, especially when you have different income streams like donation tins and voucher booklets. But we raised more than we anticipated, and we are truly grateful to the public.”
In addition to direct donations, funds were raised through the sale of restaurant voucher booklets, generously donated by local Spar stores, as well as contributions collected in tins and baskets throughout the mall.
A notable contribution came from TMA Models, whose team of young models assisted by carrying donation tins and encouraging shoppers to support the cause. They also helped sell the voucher booklets during the weekend.

TMA Models founder Trish Basson said the organisation has supported SPCA Uitenhage for several years and remains committed to its work.
“The SPCA Uitenhage has been an ongoing beneficiary for TMA Models. We have seen first-hand how they love and care for the animals with respect,” said Basson.
“The models and parents loved being part of this worthy cause. The animals deserve a safe space until they are adopted, and we believe every small act of kindness helps.”
Basson added that TMA Models hopes to continue partnering with the SPCA in future fundraising drives and charity initiatives.

Erasmus said the recent wave of community-led events; including music trivia evenings and sporting initiatives in the region, reflects how deeply animal welfare resonates with the public.
“I think it is a testimony to how close animal welfare is to people’s hearts,” she said. “In our current challenging situation, people – even complete strangers – are coming to the fore. We are truly blessed in abundance.”
She added that the experience has restored her faith in humanity. “People are pulling together. We have an amazing management team and staff at the kennels. We are staying positive that this is going to work out, for us and for the animals we need to look after.”
SPCA Uitenhage expressed its gratitude to Corkwood Square, TMA Models, participating sponsors, and members of the public who contributed, saying partnerships like these demonstrate what can be achieved when a community unites behind a common cause.
This fundraiser has seen the organisation reach 63% of their target, sitting at R1,712,932 at the time of going to print on Wednesday, 4 March. To donate, visit their ‘BackaBuddy’ page.
