The Rotary 4k Fun Run was held at Uitenhage Airfield on Saturday. A field of 70 runners of all ages took part and great fun was had by all. Some did it just for fun, whilst others did it for the serious business of raising sponsorship funds for their school.

The event was organised by The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South, and sponsored by Karsans Attorneys with additional sponsorship from Klinicare. There was also a DJ to brighten up the event which was sponsored by Monster Energy.

Most competitors were not aware that there were sensible prizes, but when the presentations were about to begin and the first prize in each of the four age categories was announced, there was a sharp intake of breath as it was revealed that it was a trip in one of the light aircraft they could see in the hangar behind them.

Mutterings of “I would have tried harder if I had known” were heard. Although the youngest winner for the under 7s couldn’t have that, she received a nice Toys R Us voucher.

All the finishers received a customised medal and all prizewinners also received an engraved commemorative glass.

The age categories and results were:

  • Under 7: Gianna Basson
  • 7 – 9 years: 1st Katelyn Greef, 2nd Sydney Smallbone.
  • 10 – 12 years: 1st Jawn-Lee Bubb, 2nd Chadley Clarke, 3rd Axolile Antoni
  • 13 – 15 years: 1st Aurie Antoni, 2nd Olwakhe Shama, 3rd Iphelele Mpoluewi
  • 16 + : 1st Zinzane Zigoxo, 2nd Jason Butler, 3rd Goobesa Booi.
  • The oldest finisher (three score and ten) was Jenny Stander.

The Race Director on behalf of the Rotary Club, Clive Hassell, said that the event was successful in raising funds and that it was a strong grounding for it to become an annual event on the calendar.

The controllers of the Airfield thanked the club for choosing the airfield as the venue which was a win win situation – a totally safe and clean environment for the event with a whole airfield to run on.

Next year’s event will be on Saturday, February 15 at the same place.
