The motto of Rotary International is “Service above Self”, which is what clubs try to do wherever possible. During these trying times of COVID-19, most of their income streams from the public have dried up so they have found new and innovative ways of raising funds.

Rotary Clubs have also had major challenges in delivering their services to the community in the ways that are safe, so they’ve had to re-think some of that as well.

As part of their ongoing passion to serve the community the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South has been able to source hundreds of pairs of reading glasses in a full range of strengths, which it has just been able to donate to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital for distribution to those in need.

“Many people are not aware of the difference a simple relatively inexpensive thing like reading glasses can do to the quality of life, and which of course many can’t afford anyway,” said Clive Hassell, President of the Rotary Club of Uitenhage South.

“However, it’s so heart-warming to see the reaction and hear the words ‘Look, I can read my Bible now!’ and see the tears streaming down the elderly persons cheeks,” said Hassell.

He presented a big box containing 250 pairs of reading glasses to the ophthalmic department at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital.
