Police in Kamesh shot and killed an alleged robber on 22 June when he and three other suspects robbed a shop in Grasvoël Street in Rosedale.
According to Col Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, the four men entered the shop on Tuesday at 17:10 when two of the suspects produced firearms.
“They proceeded to threaten the complainant (23), taking an unknown amount of cash and tobacco, along with two cellphones. While the robbery was in progress, a customer entered and upon realising what was unfolding, she exited and sounded the alarm to community members,” Naidu said.
The suspects fled with community members chasing after them.
“SAPS Kamesh members immediately responded and also chased after the suspects. The suspects pointed firearms at the police, who reacted by firing at them.
“Two suspects sustained injuries, with one fatally wounded. The deceased, identity still unknown, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and fell in a yard in Falcon Street, where he succumbed to his injuries.”
The other suspect was shot in his upper leg and ankle and was taken to hospital for treatment.
“The remaining two suspects were found hiding in a house in Osprey Street. Two replica firearms, cash and the stolen goods were recovered in the house,” she added.
Police have opened a case of armed robbery and an inquest was opened in respect of the deceased suspect.
