
THE quick response by members of a security company in Uitenhage led to the successful apprehension of an alleged business robber in the early hours of the morning of Friday, 23 April.
It is alleged that at about 02:55, six men entered a supermarket in Caledon Street, Uitenhage and two of them threatened the victims with firearms.
According to police spokesperson Captain Gerda Swart, the suspects threatened the shop owner and demanded cash. “The alarm on the premises was activated and the suspects ran off taking with them three cellphones. A member from a security company responded to the alarm and succeeded in apprehending one suspect fleeing the scene,” said Captain Swart.
The suspect (27) appeared in the Uitenhage magistrate’s court on Monday on a charge of robbery. Detectives assigned to the case are currently following up on leads and more arrests are expected soon.
Acting Uitenhage Station Commander, Colonel André Swart thanked the security officers for their quick response which ultimately led to the arrest of the suspect.
Colonel Swart remarked, “Owing to sound partnerships fostered between security companies, the community and the SAPS, criminals are arrested swiftly and brought before court.”
