THE Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR) project in Kirkwood launched an exciting competition in search of an inspirational gender and cultural friendly name for the project.

In search of such a name, they challenged the Grade 10 to 12 learners of Kirkwood High, Moses Mabhida, St Colmcille, Sandisulwazi and Samkelwe secondary schools to apply their creative minds.

According to Beulah Grobler, FARR Kirkwood project coordinator, the aim was to find a name which will sit well with all age groups and the learners surely did not disappoint.

Lwando Tambo, a Grade 10 learner from Moses Mabhida High School, was named the winner with his very apt entry: “New Legacy Project”.

“With this new name the communities in and around Kirkwood, working with FARR, are symbolically creating a new and positive legacy for the next generation,” said Grobler.

In support of the competition, the Sundays River Citrus Company (SCRCC) Foundation sponsored a generous food voucher as the winning prize. This was handed to Tambo by Barbara Yates (SRCC Foundation Trust Manager).

The SRCC Foundation Trust was established in 2010 focussing on two specific objectives related to community upliftment, namely education and health.

According to Yates, the Foundation Trust is continually striving to empower and uplift the many people living in the Sundays River Valley community. They also have recently partnered with various stakeholders to enhance their impact. One of these partners is FARR.

According to Grobler, FARR has a project office manned by staff from Kirkwood, where they offer a variety of evidence based community programmes to combat alcohol abuse, especially prenatal alcohol use and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and the related health and psycho-social ills.
