A first of its kind Pokémon trading card game tournament will be held during the school holidays in Kariega and youngsters are invited to show their gaming skills and they can even swop Pokémon characters and cards.
It will be held on Saturday, 1 October from 10:00 to 13:00 in front of Bargains Books in the Corkwood Square Mall, Kariega. All interested in participating should register tomorrow (Friday) at Bargain Books.
“There will be a lot of fun as Pokémon currently is a big hit amongst the children. We will put out a few tables where the tournament will be held. Participants can pitch, register, and play. There will be two different age categories to participate in,” said Juan van Rooyen, manager of Bargain Books at Corkwood Square Mall.
“It will be held in a knock-out format. There will be very nice prizes like a Pokémon collectors’ box to the value of R1 000 for the overall winner. There also are various other prizes up for grabs as well as Manga books for the best dress-ups.”
Regarding the Pokémon swop, “genuine cards will be swoped for genuine cards only. We know there are a lot of the cheaper pirate cards, and they can obviously be swoped for the same quality.”
Juan said for the dress-up youngsters can choose any character from any book, film, or television series. Photos will be taken of the participants and the voting will be at the end of the day.
In addition, there will be a cartoon competition. Local artists are invited to show their own Manga drawings. Anyone can enter by submitting their artwork at the store on the day and the winner will receive two Manga books.
“We do this as it is important for us to interact with our clients. We have a young market and therefore this is an ideal opportunity to offer some entertainment during the school holidays.”
This Bargain Books outlet has one of the largest selection of Manga comic books in the region.
These books with their interesting illustrations and very few words are being read from back to front and are popular amongst the pre-teens.
“This form of reading, which is called graphic novel format, is a trend that started about two years ago and its popularity still increases. We also stock the Manga creative art book range.
“It might not be an intensive read, but it is a book in hand, and a great tool to encourage reading. That is what it is all about, the engagement with books and to offer young readers the opportunity to experience how books and reading increases one’s knowledge and to open new worlds to them,” said Juan.
