An off-duty police officer and his two-month-old son were killed in a head-on collision on Friday night on the Rocklands Road.
The accident happened on April 22 at about 21:30 between a Ford Ranger bakkie and a police vehicle – a Nissan bakkie.
According to Colonel Priscilla Naidu, police spokesperson, two people died on the scene, while the driver of the Ford Ranger and the female passenger of the Nissan bakkie were taken to hospital prior to police arrival.
“The deceased – an off-duty police officer, Warrant Officer Calvin Eyssen (55) – who was the driver of the Nissan bakkie and his two-month-old son died on the scene.
“At this stage, it is unclear what had happened and police are investigating a case of culpable homicide,” Naidu said.
She added that an internal investigation will also be probed because the police officer was travelling with his family in a police vehicle while off-duty.
