RESIDENTS and businesses in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality were advised that the second phase of repairs at the Korhaansdrift/Scheepersvlakte Canal began on July 29.

The canal, which supplies water to the Nooitgedacht Water Treatment Works, has to be shut down for seven days to allow for essential maintenance.

The repairs include the installation of a sub-soil drainage system and reinforcement of the HDPE liner. This work is necessary to secure the tie-in infrastructure until permanent concrete sections can be installed during the next available shutdown period in June/July 2025.

Municipal Media Liaison Officer, Mthubanzi Mniki said, “To minimise disruptions, the municipality has planned extensively and made system adjustments.

“However, some areas will still be affected, including: Motherwell, Wells Estate, Bluewater Bay, Arcadia, Bethelsdorp, Chatty, Kwadwesi, Joe Slovo, Perseverance, Despatch, and Fairbridge Heights.”

Mniki added that water trucks will be available at designated locations to mitigate the impact of the shutdown. Residents and businesses are urged to use water sparingly during this time to delay the depletion of reservoirs and prevent a complete cutoff from the normal distribution system.

The municipality will communicate truck positions on their social media platforms. Residents are advised to follow these updates for the latest information.
