THE extension of Acacia Road which leads to Moeggesukkel on the far side of Rosedale, was officially opened last week.
“The contract was completed within budget and within the time frame. It is estimated that this road will last for 20 to 35 years with no need for maintenance,” said Rosie Daaminds, Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral Committee Member for Roads and Transport.
According to her the construction of the extended road was completed in three months and a total of R5 million was spent. Twenty four local labourers benefited from the project.
The project, which was contracted through Kayalihle Trading, consisted of 800m of asphalt surfaced road. This included a 1.5m wide side- walk along the entire length of the road to improve pedestrian safety.
“In year 2020 and 2021 we plan to upgrade many more roads in this community.”
On the same day of the opening of the Acacia Road extension two other roads, Leeu Street and Hippo street, were officially opened in Colchester.
Ward 53 councillor, Nomazulu Mthi said the building of these roads means a lot to the residents in these communities.
“Leeu Street was a gravel road and residents were often stuck at home when it rained, as the road became very muddy,” said Mthi.
