In a significant development at the Kariega Magistrate’s Court today, June 12, Judge Mahlati ruled to accept WhatsApp conversations as evidence in the murder case against Natasha Van Eck (56).
She is accused of murdering her husband, Gideon van Eck (60), on November 13, 2022, but claims it was in self-defense.
Natasha, wearing her wedding ring, appeared stoic in court. She was neatly dressed in a grey jersey, blue jeans, and boots.
During the proceedings today, June 12, the state prosecutor argued for the inclusion of WhatsApp voice notes between the deceased and his sister, which discuss his relationship with his wife and children.
Opposing this, George Malgas, the legal representative for Natasha, stated that the voice notes should not be used to test the credibility of the deceased, given his inability to participate in the trial.
Malgas further claimed that Gideon was abusive towards his wife and children, an allegation the prosecution denies.
Despite the contention, Magistrate Mahlati decided that the WhatsApp messages would be admitted as evidence, emphasising that all evidence presented in court would be thoroughly evaluated.
“For evidence to have value, it must be corroborated,” stated Mahlati.
The case has been remanded to Thursday, July 11. Natasha has been released on bail.
