MUIR College held on to defeat Union High School 12-9 in a tense inter-schools rugby fixture in Graaff-Reinet on Saturday.

Playing with a stiff breeze in the first half, the home team applied the pressure in the opening exchange and built up a healthy 9-0 lead via the accurate boot of flyhalf James Pienaar. Midway through the first half, the visitors’ forwards started gaining the ascendancy as they took the game to the opposition. Sustained pressure and a slip in Union’s defence allowed the Muir flyhalf, Ethan Williams to cut through for an excellent try, which was converted by Luke van Aardt.

In the second half, Muir seemed to have things under control after a superb try out wide by Babongile Pepeta, but the home team came back to ensure a tense finish.

Other results: 14A (5-5); 15A (22-14); 16A (51-0); Muir III (36-19) and Muir II (5-22).
