A man died last night, Sunday, August 1 after he was dragged underneath a car in Durban Street, Kariega just before 21:00.
The driver of the vehicle allegedly left a club in this street and as he was driving off, he was stopped by a witness who informed him that there was someone being dragged underneath his moving vehicle.
Police spokesperson, Capt. Gerda Swart, said that emergency services and the police were summoned to the scene.
“It was established that the unknown male victim, a pedestrian in his forties, had passed away. The driver of the vehicle was arrested on the scene on charges of culpable homicide and drunken driving,” she said.
The 45-year-old driver is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, August 2.
“The South African Police Service is warning drivers not to drive after consuming alcohol but instead contact a responsible person to fetch them or make use of alternative transport to go home,” Swart said.
