ALTHOUGH all adoptions are special to the Uitenhage & District SPCA and bring much joy, Irene’s was particularly special and SPCA staff was overjoyed when she was finally adopted.

According to Deirdré Swift, chairperson of the Uitenhage & District SPCA, Irene came in as a stray, a fully grown Pitbull/Staffie cross approximately one-and-a-half years old, full of life and all she wanted was love and affection.

“We were so hopeful that her owner would come looking for her, but Irene was never claimed,” said Deirdré.

“Knowing that the odds were not in her favour, being an adult Pitbull-cross and that black dogs are often overlooked, her loving nature convinced us to give her a chance at adoption.”

Many months went by, she waited patiently, but Irene wasn’t adopted and the SPCA was worried they wouldn’t find her the loving home she so deserved.

Finally, one day along came Johan “Bardy” Badenhorst asking to meet Irene.

“On a wet day, in a muddy meet and greet area, it was love at first sight for both of them. A mud covered Bardy committed to her adoption and Irene, now named Irie has never looked back.

“The bond that exists between Irie and Bardy is incredible, his commitment and love for her is amazing. Our wish for shelter animals is a world full of Bardy’s,” said Deirdré.
