PINK will be the colour of the day on Saturday, October 31 – in support of people affected by cancer.

It is the official colour for participation in the Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer presented by the Eastern Cape Department of Health.

For the past 22 years this event has locally been supported by thousands, but owing to COVID-19 restrictions, the event will this year be a virtual walk, replicating a physical location-based event. This means that for the first time, it will be supported not only across the Eastern Cape, but also nationally and even globally, with even more people participating in a 5km or 6 500 steps walk. Any location goes, if walks are not mass events, and it should be held between 08:00 and 10:00 and adhere to all COVID-19 regulations.

Various satellite walks will be held, including at Despatch and Uitenhage, in solidarity with the Big Walk. In Uitenhage, Lumotech, has given the green light for one of its employees, Maureen Pullen, who organised a local event supporting the Big Walk for Cancer.

“A large group of us annually goes to Port Elizabeth to participate in the Big Walk for Cancer. We still wish to support the event and therefore have decided to organise something local for all who want to celebrate the lives of cancer survivors and their loved ones,” said Maureen Pullen, an employee from Lumotech in Uitenhage.

“Whilst participating in the walk, social distancing is of utmost importance as are the rest of the COVID-19 protocols. We are very grateful towards Lumotech who agreed to pay for fifty entrants to this year’s virtual event. Our participation also forms part of the company’s wellness programme,” said Maureen.

The Big Walk for Cancer’s support event in Uitenhage will start and finish at the Uitenhage Cricket Club (opposite the Uitenhage Indoor Sports Centre). All participants need to be there at 07:30 for the start at 08:00. A 5km route will be followed through the neighbourhood. A lucky draw as well as a Jerusalema dance will be held at the finish point.

“It is not only for Lumotech employees. All who have entered for this year’s Virtual Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer are welcome to join us, as long as all COVID-19 protocols are adhered to,” said Maureen.

Maureen wishes to thank Lumotech for agreeing to support the walk, as well as sponsors Shiaam Fredericksson, JC’s Juice, Derrick Inggs, Werner Deysel and Dajee’s.
