The recent floods caused havoc in various parts of Kariega and surrounding areas. A large number of residents were left stranded as a result of the extensive damage to property and infrastructure.

The Uitenhage Lions Club was one among many civic organisations and religious establishments that answered the call to humanitarian aid. The Lions were supported in their relief efforts by a partnership with Amazon, the International online shopping giant.

“At the beginning of 2024, the Lions Clubs of South Africa were chosen by Amazon to be their preferred relief organisation”, says Uitenhage Lions President Tanja Erasmus.

“This essentially means that Amazon has committed to supporting Lions’ activities financially and otherwise.”

Erasmus added that this agreement played a huge role in ensuring that the Lions of Uitenhage could respond to the crises effectively.

With the assistance of Amazon, we were able to provide essentials such as toiletries, ladies’ hygiene products and food to affected residents. This went a long way towards supplementing and enhancing aid received from various quarters.

Lion President Erasmus is full of praise for the aid received from various sources. “A tragedy like this brings out the best in people. Our Club received donations from all over the country as well as from the Lions Clubs of St. Croix and Host in Gqeberha.” <<< Not sure what is meant by “and Host”>>

“We also had several individuals offering donations of food and clothing. The biggest accolade does, however, go to the members of the Uitenhage Lions Club. Their absolute dedication and willingness to sacrifice their time and resources to serve the communities of Kariega and Despatch truly knows no bounds,” Erasmus said.

The focus of the Uitenhage Lions will now shift from disaster relief to social relief. “Our efforts do not stop here. As people are returning to their homes that are often devastated, we will be assisting where we can with the provision of essentials. We are already in contact with several organisations regarding this,” said Club Project Chair Raynard McLaren.

Anyone interested in getting involved with the Uitenhage Lions Club is invited to visit the club’s Facebook page and leave their name and number.
