A landmine was discovered by two children in the Strelitzia Dam in Kariega at the weekend.

According to police spokesperson, W/O Majola Nkohli, the children were playing at the now empty dam on Sunday, October 23 when they discovered something that “looked like a landmine” at approximately 17:45. Kariega police were notified and the Gqeberha Explosive Section called out to the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that it was a shell of a TM46 landmine that was inactive, and the shell was removed by the Unit. Further sweeping of the area will be done again during this week by the unit,” Nkohli said.

This discovery was made three years after several mortars were found in the dam in October 2019. By February 2020, at least 20 mortars have been found in the dam.
