Employment and labour inspectors are currently on a blitz in Uitenhage, visiting the manufacturing sector, wholesale as well as retail sector to look at compliance with all labour legislation, particularly the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
Following allegations of recurring occupational injuries at Goodyear SA, a tyre manufacturer in Uitenhage, the inspector general, Aggy Moiloa has decided to put a hawks eye on the company to ensure compliance and assist workers if there are any injuries on duty claims.
Additionally focus will also be on all contractors within Goodyear SA. The department will also be inspecting Pick ‘n Pay Penford and Pick ‘n Pay Republic Square in Uitenhage to determine the level of compliance with labour legislation.
“Blitz inspections are the yard-stick we use to determine compliance with enforcement where necessary,” said Nomfundo Douw-Jack, chief director provincial operations.
“Where there are non-compliances, we issue notices that give employers an opportunity to correct. If after the stipulated timeframe, the employer fails to comply then prosecution is initiated.
“This week is also used as an opportunity for both employers and employees to be educated on the labour legislation.”
The aim of the Decent Work Agenda is to strengthen the fundamental principles of compliance and rights of workers. The Department will be rigid to those sectors who do not comply hence partaking in these Inspections.
