NATHI “We Care” was established by a group of community members of KwaLanga and Rosedale who are concerned about the increasing cases of gender-based violence in their communities, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We want to help raise awareness in our communities about the importance of protecting every human being, especially women and children who are the most targeted in this gender-based violence epidemic,” said Martin Pram, project manager of Nathi.

Social media have made it possible for Pram and all the other Nathi members to meet and share their ideas on how to transform their societies in joining them in the fight against the on-going brutal attacks on women and children.

“Apart from the gender-based violence epidemic, Uitenhage is also rated as one of the top hot spot COVID-19 areas in the province, engulfed with high numbers of infections and spreading of the virus. This clearly exposed the most vulnerable and less fortunate, especially child-headed households,” said Pram.”

Therefore, Nathi members took a stand and now call upon all men and women in their society to join them in their campaign to fight gender-based violence.

“Our society should not take this campaign against gender-based violence lightly.

“We need to stand together to fight this and to create a society that will respect every human being and protect those who are vulnerable,” said Pram.

Nathi, for the duration of August, which is also known as Women’s Month, will be collecting clothes, blankets and non-perishable foods.

The aim is to raise enough to be of help to 100 families in need in our society. The donations will be handed out to the families on Friday, August 28.
