KARIEGA – Atlas Security’s armed response unit in Kariega responded to a serious burglary attempt in Mimosa Drive, Fairbridge Heights in Kariega, leaving a resident with multiple injuries requiring urgent medical attention on Saturday, 14 March, SAPS confirmed.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson André Beetge confirmed that cases of burglary and attempted murder were opened after the incident.

He added that “two suspects allegedly kicked open the main door and entered the house, then shot a 28-year-old male victim in his arm and torso. They fled after taking two mobile phones and a laptop.”

Atlas Security stated that at 22:46, Atlas Security’s control room received a panic signal. “Our armed response officers were dispatched immediately, with the first unit arriving at the scene within four minutes. Multiple units responded to the incident.”

The statement added that upon arrival, officers found the resident outside the residence with serious injuries. “He had sustained a laceration to his head, a gunshot wound to his upper right arm, and a second gunshot wound to the right side of his chest.

“First aid was administered at the scene, with dressings applied to manage the bleeding whilst further assistance was on its way,” the statement said. “Gardmed arrived shortly after, took over patient care, and transported the resident to hospital for further medical treatment.”

According to information gathered by officials, two unknown male suspects gained access to the property and forced entry by kicking in the front door. “A violent confrontation took place inside, during which the suspects used a panga and a firearm.”

Throughout the incident, the Atlas control room made contact with the resident’s family to ensure they were informed of the situation.

“We are deeply saddened by this incident and extend our heartfelt wishes for a full and speedy recovery from everyone at Atlas Security. Our thoughts are with the resident and his family during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

“Residents in the Fairbridge Heights area are encouraged to ensure that access gates, pedestrian gates, and front doors are properly secured at all times, and to activate their panic buttons immediately in the event of any emergency,” the statement concluded.
