A trio of young Kareteka from Kariega triumphantly displayed skill and determination in a major way recently.

The Goju-Kai Karate-Do branch from the Gunguluza township returned home with impressive results from the National Karate Tournament in Bloemfontein. Held over the Women’s Day weekend, the tournament brought together top karate practitioners from across the country, all vying for a spot at the upcoming 2025 tournament in Japan.

Oyisa Nyanga (12), Cordelia Matroos (14), and Lunje Netnou (11), the qualifiers from the Kariega dojo, demonstrated unwavering dedication and a fierce competitive spirit as they progressed to the knockout rounds. In a fitting tribute to Women’s Day, all three local girls secured their places at the prestigious Japan tournament.

Netnou clinched an impressive third place in the Kata Division, while Nyanga took fourth place in the Kumite division. However, it was Cordelia Matroos who stole the show, emerging as the outstanding winner with a resounding first place in the Kumite division.

As they prepare to represent South Africa’s national colours in Japan, their trainer and Sensei, Xolisile Michael Netnou said the trio’s achievement serves as a testament to their hard work and the supportive environment of their local dojo. “With their sights set on the 2025 tournament, Oyisa, Cordelia and Lunje are sure to make their mark on the international karate stage. I’m so incredibly proud of them, and their focus. They will continue training and improving their craft, in preparation for the tournament in Japan. This is huge for them as they are the first girls from KwaNobuhle to have this opportunity to go to Japan,” he excitedly concluded.

The three girls, Michael and the community are now going to initiate various fund-raising events to gather the finances to get each child to Japan next year. It will cost R80 000 for each child’s travels.
