In emphasising the importance to preserve heritage and to highlight the significance of incorporating the natural environment within a development, Galaxy Bingo in Kariega is proud of the indigenous Corkwood tree, which features on their deck area as part of their patrons’ dining experience.

“The preservation of this unique species of tree was part of the development team’s objective and as such, the surrounding designs and features were done in such a way to complement the natural water catchment to the tree,” said Charne Blume, Galaxy Bingo marketing manager.

“The tree is impressive, and our aim was to ensure that it remains protected so that its natural beauty can be enjoyed as part of our patrons’ experience.

“Therefore, a horticulturalist does prune the tree from time to time. The interior design of the site also incorporates synthetic corkwood to pay tribute to this iconic feature.

“We have also named a road running race held prior to this devastating pandemic after the tree, for which finisher medals were also made of synthetic cork. We plan to continue with these enhancements in the future,” said Blume.

According to her, The Galaxy Bingo group is committed to preserving and uplifting the communities in which its sites are located. True to this philosophy, it was the brainchild of their CEO, to enhance the tree a unique feature as part of the dining experience on the deck.

Lyle Edwards, Galaxy Bingo Branch Manager, said that the staff members are proud of the tree and are often asked by patrons what kind of tree it is.

“We were told to take good care of the tree and so we do. It creates a lovely atmosphere, especially during the evening with the decorative lights which hang in the tree,” said Edwards.

The new shopping mall in Kariega, which opened its doors today, was named after this heritage tree on the deck of Galaxy Bingo.
